E-Shift is the name of a manual shifting system for automatic transmissions, that Jeep and Lexus cars are equipped with. The gearbox has electronic control. The system was used on Jeeps in 2014 when the Grand Cherokee was introduced with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The system was used on Lexus models much earlier: in the 1999 IS sedan.
Features
A characteristic of the Jeep's E-Shift system is the design of the selector lever, which the driver can use to select and manually switch between driving modes. The shift lever returns to its original position after each operation. The shifter has integrated LED lights that show the current mode of the transmission.
On Lexus models, the E-Shift lever has a more classic design. The lever stays in a certain position until the driver changes modes. It is also possible to switch to manual mode using the paddle shifters.

Common defects in E-Shift transmissions
- The transmission pump fails due to vibrations.
- The mechanical parts and seals wear out very quickly.
- The solenoid valves quickly clogged.
- The aluminum planetary gear set has a short lifespan.
